Stenciling A Ceiling

When we moved into our house the ceiling in our guest bedroom had glow in the dark stars all over.  In my attempt to remove them, I also removed part of the ceiling.  Fabulous.

I hate painting ceilings.  I think I would rather have dental work done then paint a ceiling.  Seriously.  Well regardless, I painted the ceiling.  Although I learned from previously painted ceilings, I still managed to miss parts.  So my way of attempting to add a little spice to the bedroom, ANNNDDD help with my inability to properly paint a ceiling, I added some color and a stencil and went to town.

We added this light, and are loving how this room is turning out!

I had no rhyme or reason as to where I placed the stencil, I just eyeballed it, overlapped a few for fun and when it felt done, I was done!  The stencil I got from Michaels Craft Store a while back and used it on this project and the paints I also used on the same project and  had some extra laying around in the basement from other projects, so really this project didn't cost me anything!

Although this project has been done for a while now, we are slowly getting things done and hopefully will be complete before the boys arrive!!

DIY Curtain Rods + Burlap Curtains

So we have this theme sprinkled throughout our house, and to make the nursery feel a little more "boy like" we did similar projects here, here and here, and DIY'd some industrial curtain rods for their room.

And for the tie backs we used kitchen twine....nice touch and we had it on hand!

We added some burlap curtains that I bought from here.

**Word of advice**  I researched the best way to prepare the burlap curtains for hanging, since they are not a normal fabric and it was recommended to wash and dry them.  DON'T!

Two Reasons Why:

1.  They shrink when they dry.  I bought 96 inch curtains, we adjusted the curtain rod to the height we wanted *before washing and drying* and now they are wondering where the flood is.  Not the end of the world, but having the curtain rods already in made it difficult to switch things around.

ALSO....

2. They wrinkle and I despise ironing.  I hate it, and if there is a hell, and I end up there, then ironing ALL day is what I will do.  No amount of dryer balls, taking them out before the dryer is done, happy dancing, or praying would help them.  Just lots of steam, spritzing with water and the dreadful ironing did the trick.

It took me hours.  Hours and hours to iron three curtain panels, and while they didn't turn out perfect, they are a LOT better then they were.

It didn't take very long for the hubby to get them installed and the curtains and the curtain rod really transform the room!

Needless to say lesson learned, but I love how they turned out!

Light Up Our Life

In our mission to make this house our home, we are updating some of the lighting around and are loving it so far!
After eyeing up this light at Menards and himming and hawing over it for months, with gift cards and rebates in hand we pulled the trigger and brought this baby home!

Installation was easy,  besides the fact that I kept imagining the hubs falling off the ladder.  I just hid in the living room until he was done.  We love it. Enough said.
I have also been OBSESSING about owning a capiz chandelier for the longest time and for once my patience has paid off.  After months and months and months and months of creeping on World Markets website and in store, I found this baby for 50% off and may I add that it was the last one...

We also had to buy this since without it our room would be a little dark:

world market, capiz, lighting, chandelier, bedroom, diy, hardware, install, capiz chandelier

At first I wasn't completely diggin' it in our bedroom, but looking back I think it was because I was WAY over tired and not thinking straight, but after a nap things were looking better!

We also changed up the lighting in both of our bathrooms.  Needless to say this light wasn't our style and had to go.

 So we changed it out:

The half bath's update included going from this light:

lighting, menards, pendant lighting, stained glass, cream, paint, diy, decor, decorations, bathroom, bathroom lighting, vanity lighting, vanity

 To this light:

If it looks familiar (maybe?) we ended up going with the same one that we had used in our half bath at our first house.

We still have a few more rooms to find lighting for...The hunt is OFFICIALLY on.

Settling In

The day we moved in was crazy.  Boxes flying, newspaper everywhere, furniture randomly all over the house.  We manage to get our bedroom and the living room the most functional, and over the past few weeks we've been unpacking, putting away and trying, TRYING to get things in order!  We are loving the layout of the house and totally loving how our furniture works with the flow!

While we still have to figure things out, here is where we're at so far!

Our office was red, had a decal on the wall and seemed kind of bland.

kitchen, bathroom, new house, moving in, hallway, living room, outside, bedrooms, basement, officer, porch, second house, windows, dining room

And after a little paint and furniture:

kitchen, bathroom, new house, moving in, hallway, living room, outside, bedrooms, basement, officer, porch, second house, windows, dining room

When we moved in we had this:

kitchen, bathroom, new house, moving in, hallway, living room, outside, bedrooms, basement, officer, porch, second house, windows, dining room

After some paint and getting our things in place we have this:

kitchen, bathroom, new house, moving in, hallway, living room, outside, bedrooms, basement, officer, porch, second house, windows, dining room

Painting the soffit made a HUGE difference with making the room look SO much bigger and it feels good to have a starter kitchen that we don't HAVE to completely gut right away!

Here is our dining room before we got our hands on it:

kitchen, bathroom, new house, moving in, hallway, living room, outside, bedrooms, basement, officer, porch, second house, windows, dining room

And all we have done is paint, but it seems a lot less "brown".  The crazy thing:  Our dining room is all the same color, no accent wall, that's just how the lighting works in our house.

Here is our living room before we painted and added our furniture:

kitchen, bathroom, new house, moving in, hallway, living room, outside, bedrooms, basement, officer, porch, second house, windows, dining room

We have been spending most of our time in this room and after moving things around managed to get it functional.  We love how comfortable this room is now!

kitchen, bathroom, new house, moving in, hallway, living room, outside, bedrooms, basement, officer, porch, second house, windows, dining room

kitchen, bathroom, new house, moving in, hallway, living room, outside, bedrooms, basement, officer, porch, second house, windows, dining room

Our bathroom.  Here is what we started with:

kitchen, bathroom, new house, moving in, hallway, living room, outside, bedrooms, basement, officer, porch, second house, windows, dining room

We have SO many plans for this room but while we figure out our game plan here is our bathroom once we added our little touches to it:

kitchen, bathroom, new house, moving in, hallway, living room, outside, bedrooms, basement, officer, porch, second house, windows, dining room

The same goes for the half-bath:

kitchen, bathroom, new house, moving in, hallway, living room, outside, bedrooms, basement, officer, porch, second house, windows, dining room

I threw down a bath mat and called it a day. Bam. Done.  At least for now.

I had big plans to get all the wallpaper down and get this room painted in time.

kitchen, bathroom, new house, moving in, hallway, living room, outside, bedrooms, basement, officer, porch, second house, windows, dining room

But that didn't happen and now this room is our catch-all room.  We haven't done anything and I just close the door and pretend it looks done inside.  Maybe one of these days I'll have the energy to tackle it.

kitchen, bathroom, new house, moving in, hallway, living room, outside, bedrooms, basement, officer, porch, second house, windows, dining room

Our bedroom was kind of bland.  We didn't like the color and even though the curtains worked for the previous owners, they weren't really our style.

kitchen, bathroom, new house, moving in, hallway, living room, outside, bedrooms, basement, officer, porch, second house, windows, dining room

After some painting and some blinds, we did manage to get our room together and love how cozy it is.

kitchen, bathroom, new house, moving in, hallway, living room, outside, bedrooms, basement, officer, porch, second house, windows, dining room

I was NOT digging the "blue horse room".  The first thing I peeled off the walls were a bunch of horse decals that were everywhere...

kitchen, bathroom, new house, moving in, hallway, living room, outside, bedrooms, basement, officer, porch, second house, windows, dining room

And after a few coats of paint and our attempt to get something kind of set up:

kitchen, bathroom, new house, moving in, hallway, living room, outside, bedrooms, basement, officer, porch, second house, windows, dining room

The finished portion of the basement is a hot mess.  Totally looks like a tornado went through but we have plans to figure out what we're keeping, donating and tossing.

kitchen, bathroom, new house, moving in, hallway, living room, outside, bedrooms, basement, officer, porch, second house, windows, dining room

Moving on to the hubs' work area in the basement, we pretty much just dumped our boxes and moved on.

kitchen, bathroom, new house, moving in, hallway, living room, outside, bedrooms, basement, officer, porch, second house, windows, dining room

I haven't seen any zombies come out of the crawl space yet, but I'm still on guard...

kitchen, bathroom, new house, moving in, hallway, living room, outside, bedrooms, basement, officer, porch, second house, windows, dining room

Right now my sweet fur baby is trying her hardest for me to take her out so I'm off to enjoy the beautiful weather!!
