I got this trunk this past summer for $5.00 at a flea market and snatched it up! It was old, dirty, needed some work, but I saw the potential and fell in love. I am always on the hunt for cheap furniture that I can give a makeover and have in my home. We needed a coffee table in our living room, but I didn't want any ordinary coffee table and this trunk adds a ton of extra storage for blankets. So this baby had a new home with us!
Then it sat in our basement for four months until I decided to bring it upstairs one night when the hubs' was at work and put it in the living room. His face was priceless when he came home and saw this. I think he thought I had lost my mind...See, most of the time if he is hesitant about an idea I have for the house and I know it is the way to go I just wait until he is at work to take it on.
I LOVED it, but it was difficult to move around the living room, so I decided to add some casters to the bottom. We picked up four casters from Farm and Fleet for around $12.00.
The hubs started out by measuring where he wanted them placed and marking it with a pencil.
He then pre-drilled the holes for each caster and we got to down tightening them up.
We secured the casters to the trunk with some nuts and bolts.
Here is the difference that a few little casters made to our living room.

This project took us all of 15 minutes to complete and makes such a difference.
I still have some ideas to spruce up this trunk...but that will have to wait till it gets warmer out. Right now I'm just enjoying the fact that it is a little more functional and is less of a pain to move around the room!!
Anyone else use a trunk, or any type of furniture, in an interesting way to add some character??
I just bought a trunk at a yard sale today, almost exactly like yours. I googled to see if anyone had added casters. Love how yours turned out! Love your style!
ReplyDeleteThanks!! The trunk is still a work in progress, but adding the casters made a huge difference!!

Always keep your eyes and ears open so that when opportunities arise, you will be prepared. This relates to life in general, but most assuredly to redecorating your space on a budget. Go to a local Flea Market or weekend Garage Sale, and see what you can find. With a little love and some elbow grease, you just might discover that someone else's trash is your treasure!
