A couple of years ago we had a local company come out and give us a quote to replace the windows and they quoted us approximately $1,000.00 per window!! After almost having a heart attack we contacted a different company who quoted us approximately $600.00 per window. We were interested but were not at a point financially to take that on, so we just wore a few extra layers during the winter and sucked it up. There were times where we could literally feel the breeze blowing in and obviously our electric bill reflected that. Well, a few months ago the hubs and I took advantage of a deal going on at Menards and purchased 10 Jeld-Wen Double Hung Replacement Windows with grids. There were originally around $160.00 per window but were on sale for $140, so we jumped on it and bought them. We have been talking for a while about our need to replace the original windows in our house, but did not realize how truly easy it was until we did a little research. Each window took about an hour to install, from start to finish and cost approximately $150.00 per window (including caulk, shims, insulation, screws and the window itself). That equals out to a savings of anywhere from $850 per window with the one company to $500 per window with the second quote and I think the results are amazing:
The hubs and I are ecstatic with those savings and want to show our process:
To get this party started you want to remove the old window. Doing that is not too difficult, just cutting the ropes and taking out any parts that may get in the way of installing the new window.
Once the window is clear and open and any repairs are made (if need be), spray foam insulate any openings from the weights that were left, just make sure not to over spray because it tends to ooze out if too much is used. After you are ready to caulk around the interior frame where the window will be installed and put in the window.
Once caulked, insert the window into the opening and screw it into place. After it is secured the window is ready for spray foam insulation.
Like I said above the spray foam insulation expands a ton so we waited to install on the trim pieces until we knew it was done "growing".
At that point we used a knife and cut off any excess then installed all the trim pieces around the window and caulked the exterior of the window to prevent any water coming through.
We reinstalled the trim pieces around the window and BAM, beauty and efficiency all wrapped up into one awesome package!
And viola, new windows installed! We absolutely love how they look and most importantly LOVE how our home is holding in the heat a ton better!
